CES 2012 Preview: Will Sony Blow us away with an OLED TV offering?

By Phil Conner

Sony at CESRecently, Sony's president Howard Stringer made the statement that Sony is working on a new TV that will be transformational. Well, we keep up with TVs. I mean we know almost everything there is to know about the current state of TVs. We cover the features, the brands, the accessories – about everything there is to cover and the only thing we can think of that this statement might mean is that Sony has an OLED TV coming soon that will actually be priced reasonably.

Last year, Sony's 24.5" OLED TV prototype was our favorite TV of the entire show and received our top editor's choice award in the following article here. This TV was glasses free 3D with amazing color, contrast, resolution, and black levels. For all who saw it know how great it looked. However, this TV was not for sale and was not intended for sale. It never came to market.

We're speculating here, but we think that Sony may be coming with a larger OLED Television that may actually be scheduled for market. It may be 2013 before it hits, but that's exactly what Sony is looking for – A Big Hit. Their TV division has been struggling for years and bleeding red ink. They need a breakthrough to overcome past bad decisions about where to invest. They have the technology and are capable of Apple-like innovation. The question is, can they produce it at a cost that can drive purchases.
