New Sony OLED TV, 3D Capable and Amazing!

By: Robert Wiley

At CES 2010 Sony revived its commitment to OLED TV technology with a 3D display of a prototype 22 inch OLED TV. I will admit that it probably had the finest 3D picture quality of any TV we reviewed at the show. The organic light emitting diode technology appears to be the best for 3D content playback. Colors and definition were fantastic.

Sony representatives did not expect the TV to ship in 2010. The unit was somewhat blocked off from full view so it was difficult to see whether it was a fully operational and functional display or whether it was solely set up for the show. We believe it was just set up for the show to display the capability, but not necessarily the practicality of the technology.

Let's face it, Sony will not be bringing this TV to the open market during an extended recession at such an exhorbitant price point. Even early adaptors would not afford the estimated $5500 price point this small OLED would have to sell for.

It was there as an extreme example of an excellent technology, but dont expect to see it shipping in 2010. Same goes for the 152" Panasonic plasma...though they did surprise us when they shipped the 103" unit.
